There are some instances where removing a tooth is the best course of action to take. Having a tooth extracted may sound a little daunting, but it’s often a straightforward procedure that won’t cause any lasting discomfort.

You might require an extraction if:

Your wisdom teeth have become impacted.

A tooth is infected.

You have loose teeth as a consequence of gum disease.

You have crowded teeth.

You have baby teeth that are still present as adult teeth begin to erupt.

A tooth is beyond repair.

Aside from the removal of wisdom teeth, we recommend replacing the gap after a tooth extraction, to avoid the long-term consequences of living with missing teeth. Your dentist will discuss suitable alternatives for replacing the gap at your consultation.

How it’s done

Under local anaesthetic, the socket of the affected tooth is carefully widened, allowing us to loosen the tooth in order to remove it. The area is then thoroughly but gently cleaned, and we may use stitches to allow the wound to heal effectively.

1. Will it be painful?

Because of evolutions in modern dentistry, having a tooth extracted is no longer associated with the idea of pain. In fact, as a local anaesthetic is used, you won’t feel anything whilst undergoing the procedure. Some patients experience some mild discomfort once the local anaesthetic has worn off, but this can be controlled with over-the-counter painkillers.

Rest assured, you will be in the hands of supportive dentists and dental nurses, who will not proceed with the procedure until you feel relaxed and at ease in your surroundings. Your wellbeing is our first priority.

2. Is there a recovery period involved?

We recommend resting for a few hours after a tooth has been extracted. You will be provided with clear and concise aftercare advice, including what kinds of foods to avoid. If you are worried about anything when you get home after the extraction, don’t hesitate to get in touch with us, as we’re here to support you. We have an out of hours emergency WhatsApp service should you need to contact us if there is anything you are concerned about after your extraction.

3. What options are there for replacing a missing tooth?

Once your tooth has been extracted, you may start to think about your tooth replacement options. Here at Vertüe Dental, we offer both removable and fixed tooth replacement treatments, such as conventional dentures and bridges, in addition to dental implants, which are considered the optimal tooth replacement treatment.

What a great experience. Arjun and his team were kind, helpful and informative. It is a great set up - a relaxed waiting area with a TV screen, water and coffee available. After filling out a simple form, I was taken through into one of the rooms. Saw Arjun Varma today after not going to a dentist in 7 years as had enough of being poked and prodded. But the way he did my clean and tartar removal was the most gentle experience I’ve had so far with a dentist!
