During your routine appointments, we will carry out oral cancer screening, to flag up any potential causes for concern, so they can be investigated at the earliest opportunity.

Early detection is extremely important with this type of cancer; we can’t emphasise enough how important it is to avoid missing your routine dental appointments. We are here to be caring and supportive, whatever the outcome of your appointment with us.

How it’s done

During your oral cancer screening appointment, we will ask you about your lifestyle and if you’ve noticed any changes to the soft tissues in your mouth. The symptoms we look for during your screenings are:

• Lip or mouth sores that haven’t healed (we will ask you about how long you have had these during your visit).
• White and red patches across the soft tissues of your mouth.
• Loose teeth or changes to your bite.
• Lumps or growths in the mouth.
• New and lingering pain.
• Difficulty swallowing.
• Changes to your voice – hoarseness can be a sign of mouth cancer.
