Like with other dental restorations, the way you look after your teeth will influence how long your inlay or onlay lasts for. With good care and appropriate material selection, they typically last in excess of 10-15 years.
Inlays and onlays can be lab-made and fabricated as a single unit, that’s then cemented onto the tooth, to restore shape and function.
The first step is to examine the extent of the decay affecting the tooth or teeth in question, as this will determine whether we use an inlay or onlay. Inlays and onlays are made by taking an impression of the tooth cavity and this is replicated, using materials like composite resin, porcelain or gold. The decay or damage will be removed and we’ll fit you with a temporary inlay or onlay, at the preparation appointment.
Once the inlay or onlay has been made by the highly skilled dental technician, we will invite you back for a second appointment, during which we’ll remove the temporary inlay or onlay and replace it with the permanent counterpart.

Filling: the most commonly used dental restoration to address less extensive decay and damage.
Inlay: used when the cavity is too big for a filling, or requires a more durable material.
Onlay: somewhere between an inlay and a crown. Onlays cover the cusp(s) of the tooth.
Crowns encompass the whole periphery of the tooth and cover all the natural tooth to provide strength and function whereas the inlays/onlays protect and cover a particular amount of tooth structure.
Gold: a highly durable material, gold has historically been a common choice for inlays and onlays. With the introduction of tooth-coloured restorations, gold is a less common choice of material today.
Lab-made resin: blending in well with your tooth shade, lab-made resin offers a great cosmetic outcome.
Porcelain: the material that offers the most authentic-looking outcome. Porcelain is also highly durable.
